  • The word Mofa Moped means a small motorcycle having both motorcycle engine and cycling pedals.
  • It is an advanced version of a bicycle. The Moped travels much faster than bicycle reducing human efforts.
  • The design of the moped is of 2 types. They are:-
    (1). Step-Through Frame Design
    (2). Motorcycle Frame Design
  • The Step-Through Frame Design completely looks like same as the bicycle design. The design is most similar to ladybird cycles where women use that model bicycles a lot.
  •  Later on slowly the design of Moped was completely changed into the motorcycle frame design.

Who Manufactured Mofa Moped:-

  • The Legendary Mofa Moped was manufactured by an Indian motorcycle brand “Royal Enfield” in the 1980s.
  • At the beginning Moped’s India Limited was manufactured by a two-wheeler company in India.
  • Later on, Moped’s India Private Limited Company collaborated with Motobecave France Company.
  • Due to this collaboration, the company launched its first Moped in India. It was the most sold Moped in India in the year 1980s.
  • They named “Suvega Super 50” for their first launched Moped and got huge sales for that first model.
  • Moped’s India Private Limited is the 1st company in India manufacturing Moped’s in India.
  • The first manufacturing unit was set up in Tirupati in the early 1960s.
  • The brand has created a racing team in India in the years from 1960 to 1980.
  • The brand won most of the racing competition in India under the 50CC Racing challenges in Sholavaram Races.
  • Mofa Moped represents the vintage motorcycling in all the events.
  • We can say Mofa Moped was a revolution in individual transport. Many people used Moped as regular purpose bike in the years  1960-1980.
  • Later on, there is a huge development in the Automobile industry and slowly the brand was discontinued in India.
  • The company has been closed in 1988 in India.

  • The first model “Suvega Super 50” was the first model moped launched in India. It has recorded as the largest selling moped in India in the years from 1980-1985.
  • Next, the “Suvega 717” moped was launched with some improvements in the engine and they have attached the Magnetic Headlamps and a reflector in the back.
  • Later “Suvega Samrat” moped was launched with major changes in the design of the Moped. The Suvega Samrat Moped has a fuel tank in the chassis of the frame. It gets an integrated fuel tank within the Moped. The Hallow motorcycle frame acts as a fuel tank for “Suvega Samrat” moped and with major changes in it.
  • Finally, the “Suvega Super Delux” was launched and the moped was completely banned in India. In the year 1985’s the Moped’s production was completely stopped in India.

Engine Specification Of Mofa Moped:-

  • The Mofa Moped is powered by a 22CC, 2 Stroke, Single Cylinder, Air Cooled Engine.
  • It produces 0.8Bhp of maximum power.
  • The top speed of Mofa Moped is 30kmph.
  • It gets the suspension below the seat. It gets a similar suspension setup the same as a bicycle.
  • It gets the wire brakes attached to the handlebars same as the present days Scooty.
  • The Moped can handle a maximum weight of 80kgs on it.
  • The fuel tank capacity is 1.4 litres.
  • The motorcycle frame chassis acts as a fuel tank in Mofa Moped.
  • Fuel Economy of Mofa Moped is 90kmpl.
  • It gets the bicycle pedals attached to the engine. Whenever the bike stops you can use the pedals to travel on the Moped.
  • The Moped gets the halogen magnetic headlamp at the front and a rear reflector at the back. It does not have an external battery attached to it.
  • The magnetic sensor at the bulb makes the headlamp to glow during the night times.

  • Mofa Moped does not require any Registration Certificate and the Number Plate on the Moped.
  • Everyone can ride the Mofa Moped. It does not require a driving license to ride a Moped in India.
  • The maximum speed of the Moped was less than 30kmph and it does not require any License to ride.
  • The Mofa Moped has a dedicated exhaust which makes a fabulous engine sound which sounds similar to the Yamaha Rx100 Bike.
  •  Even today there are more than 10 members in India having Mofa Moped with them.

  • Till today few people in India are maintaining and using their Mopeds to the next level.
  • Especially there are 2 people in India using their Moped till now.
  • Mustansir H, an orthodontist with his mopeds. He has Java 250, Rx100, Lambretta 150, Italian Vespa 1961 Model.
  • In the year 2010, Mustansir went for his family wedding in Chennai. He was going through the advertisement in the OLX app.
  • At that time he found a 22CC Enfield Moped available for sale in Chennai.
  • He has taken this opportunity and purchased the Enfield Moped.
  • Next day, he took his Moped along with him to the railway station. He wants to transport the Moped from Chennai to Pune.
  • The transport department staff asked him to produce the RC to transport the bike. He replied that it is a 22CC Moped and it does need any Rc. The transport department didn’t agreed with his statement.
  • Later he went to a browsing centre and downloaded the RC copies and then he produced that copies to the transport department.
  • Finally, he got the moped to his home town.
  • He took his Enfield Moped to the Royal Enfield service centre and there he didn’t get the spare parts for it.
  • He has enquired with all the service centres and he didn’t get the spare for his moped.
  • Finally, he decided to fabricate the parts on his own.
  • After completely restoring the moped he published an image on the internet.
  • In 2014 he participated in a competition of vintage motorcycles with his restored Moped and won a trophy.
